Bio

David L. Smith is emeritus professor of communication and former director of the Xavier University Television Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. He designed the television curriculum, taught courses in visual communication, motion picture and television scriptwriting, directing and production. He operated the facility as an income producing entity for twenty-six years. His undergraduate degrees are in Photography (Rochester Institute of Technology) and Broadcasting (University of Cincinnati). His graduate degree in Communication Arts is also from the University of Cincinnati.

Prior to his career in the film and television industries, Mr. Smith was employed by Eastman Kodak Company as a producer of color murals for display in camera stores worldwide. After a twenty-year tenure in broadcast television as a multi-award winning cinematographer, producer and director he turned to teaching. Since the early 70’s he has been a spokesperson and advocate for socially responsible television, speaking nationally and writing on television’s potentials for personal growth and social development.

Mr. Smith’s photographic work is contemplative, exploring the intersection of light, geometry and the aesthetic dimensions as a vehicle for introspection, expression and enrichment. His photographs have been published in a variety of special interest magazines, displayed on corporate walls and exhibited in university galleries and museums. A portfolio of his spherical images was featured in the March, 2002 issue of LensWork magazine. In 2014 he began a weekly blog on the contemplative approach to photography.
